Ear Cropping and Tail Docking
Ear cropping is a surgical procedure performed by a licensed veterinarian in a sterile surgical setting while the puppy is under anesthesia. This procedure is typically completed when the puppy is between 6 and 10 weeks of age. Initial healing generally takes approximately two weeks, after which the sutures are removed.
Once healing is complete, the ear posting process begins to help the ears stand properly. Posting usually continues until the puppy’s adult teeth have fully erupted, which is typically around 6 months of age, though some puppies may require additional time. Posts are generally removed every 6 days, the ears are allowed to air out for 24 hours, and then they are reposted the following day.
The total cost for ear cropping and the required posting process can range from approximately $400 to $1,500, depending on the veterinarian, location, and length of aftercare needed.
Tail docking and dew claw removal is a surgical procedure performed by a licensed veterinarian when puppies are between 3 and 5 days old. Tail docking involves shortening the tail to meet traditional breed standards, while dew claw removal involves removing the small extra toes located on the inside of the front legs. Both procedures are performed at a very young age to minimize discomfort, support faster healing, and reduce the risk of future injury. They are completed in a clean, controlled environment with careful attention to the puppy’s health and well-being. Healing usually occurs quickly within the first few days of life, with minimal aftercare required. We choose these procedures for breed preservation, working purposes, injury prevention, and adherence to established breed standards.
